Amidst COVID, Meghalaya CM stresses on new model for promoting tourism

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today inaugurated the newly constructed Orchid Log House and Canopy Walk at Mawkasiang, near Mawdiangdiang, Shillong.

The tourism infrastructure project funded by from the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India will enable the State to attract tourists keen to explore nature. The facility is about 20 km from Shillong city and is located amidst the scenic hills of Mawdiangdiang. It has 20 log houses.  

The construction has been done to promote and boost tourism in Meghalaya.

Inaugurating the facility the Chief Minister informed that currently training of manpower for the hospitality sector is underway in the premises, which will be open for tourists once the Covid pandemic is over. 

The COVID situation has caused a massive change to our economy and social lives. Tourism has been badly hit due to the pandemic. However steps are being taken to ensure that things bounce back to normalcy soon.

“The idea is to work towards the future on how we will adapt to tourism as we deal with Covid situation. We need to plan, we need a new model for promoting tourism in the State and the entire experience for the tourist,” said the Chief Minister. 

The initiative has been taken to ensure that tourists who are keen to explore nature can continue to visit Shillong. The facility is located amidst the scenic hills of Mawdiangdiang and has 20 long houses.

The Chief Minister along with Health Minister A.L Hek also discussed with members of the Golf Club Shillong on measures to be taken to improve the infrastructure facilities for the famed Golf Course.
