Kolkata: The Bengali film fraternity woke up on Thursday to the sad news of actor Abhishek Chatterjee’s untimely demise. The 57-year-old actor breathed his last at his Prince Anwar Shah residence in Kolkata on Thursday early morning. Abhishek Chatterjee is survived by his wife and a daughter.
Abhishek Chatterjee was attending a reality show on Wednesday evening, where he fell sick. The authorities of the reality show even advised him to get admitted to the hospital. But the actor wanted to receive treatment at home. Reportedly, he was even administered saline at home. At around 1 am on Thursday, he passed away due to a massive cardiac arrest.
Known for making his big screen debut in 1986 in Tarun Majumdar’s Pathbhola, which also starred veterans like Utpal Dutt, Sandhya Roy, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Tapas Paul, Abhishek went onto become one of the popular faces of Bengali commercial films in the late 90s and early 2000s. Having acted in several Bengali films alongside Prosenjit, he was once considered a competitor of the Bengali superstar. Films like Sangarsha, Rajar Raja and Modhur Milan are runaway hits.
For several years, he was not seen on the movie set. He tried his luck in yatra. Then he again returned to the big screen with Chayamurti and Jeet-starrer Baazi. But it was Bengali serials, which gave a new life to Abhishek, the actor. With serials like Tupur Tapur, Aanchol, Chokher Tara Tui, Ichhe Nodee, Phagun Bou, Mohor and most-recently as Gungun’s (Trina Saha) father Dr Kaushik Bose in Khorkhuto, Abhishek was one of the most sought-after actors in Bengali TV.
The demise of Abhishek, who was lovingly called ‘Mithu’ in the fraternity has left the Bengali celebrities heartbroken. Actress Laboni Sarkar, one of the closest friends of Abhishek, couldn’t control her emotions. “It’s hard to believe that he is no more. He is not an actor to me but a family member. I am concerned more now about his wife and daughter,” she says.
“Mithu It’s so shocking !!! Rest in Peace,” wrote filmmaker Arindam Sil.
“Have nothing to say Mithu da,” wrote actor Saswata Chatterjee.
Young actor Ankush said he has rarely seen an actor of calibre and a gem of a person like Abhishek Chatterjee.
Actress Sreelekha Mitra wrote, “I don’t believe this Mithu da.”
