Doorstep library brings reading relief for Mizos Amidst lockdown

Ramhlun South YMA branch Library and Documentation Committee of Mizoram launched a doorstep delivery library called “Kawtkai Library”, since April 18, 2020. The project was initiated keeping in mind the nationwide lockdown which left people homebound and largely at leisure.

The aim of the library is to promote a healthy reading culture during the prolonged lockdown. The committee members wanted the residents of Ramhlun South to make good use of their free time by reading books penned by acclaimed authors.

A couple of months since its inception, the doorstep library is growing robustly, with more and more people partaking in the book reading culture. In the last four and half months, numbers of bibliophiles signing up for the library membership have increased remarkably.

The library project has attracted attention of both state and national media. The State Central Library has also acknowledged their branch YMA’s effort and has sent over hundred books through Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Fund.

The state’s Art and Culture Department has also provided assistance in procuring new books for the library. Before the spread of COVID19 virus went severe, the committee members have collected new books and refurbished the library inventory. At present, the Ramhlun South Branch YMA Library has 4500 books on record with a plan to expand and diversify the repertoire.
