Mumbai: National Award-winning Marathi filmmaker Ravi Jadhav is all set to make a film on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. On the 392nd birth anniversary of Shivaji, the makers announced that the film, titled Bal Shivaji, would hit the floors in June 2022.
The period film, says the director, will be based on untold stories of the Maratha warrior and his inspiring and chivalrous childhood. “The film will span across Shivaji Maharaj’s life from 12 to 16 years, which helped him in laying the foundation of ‘swaraj’,” said Jadhav, who made his directorial debut with 2010’s Marathi film Natarang. The film won the National Award for best feature film in Marathi.
It took eight years of research for Jadhav to come up with the script of Bal Shivaji. Having wanted to make film on Shivaji since 2015, he finally met Sandeep Ssingh of Legend Studios (he has produced films like Aligarh, Sarbjit and Mary Kom) in 2021 and narrated the story. “It was an instant click with Sandeep, who understood the importance and significance of telling this story of valour. After all, it’s an ode to one of the greatest kings who has ever ruled in India. It will be inspiring film for all the youngsters across the globe,” Jadhav added.
Meanwhile, Ssingh always wanted to make a historical film. “When Ravi approached me with this subject, it immediately worked for me. It’s an honour to make a film based on an iconic personality like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj,” he said.
Pradeep Dwivedi, Group CEO and executive director, Eros International Media Ltd, feels this is the right time to tell the story of Shivaji on big screen. “Shivaji Maharaj’s life story has been a part of every Indian’s childhood. But after reading this script, we realized that there were so many lesser known yet pivotal points in his formative years that made him the legend he became.” Producer Anand Pandit promises to make the film on a grand scale.
