Joe Biden bans Russian aircraft over US airspace

Washington DC: The United States of America has announced that it is banning Russian flight operators from its airspace. President Joe Biden said this during his first State of the Union address on Tuesday night. The ban will go into effect by the end of Wednesday.

“I am announcing that we will join our allies in closing off American airspace to all Russian flights, further isolating Russia and adding an additional squeeze on their economy,” Biden said, adding that without consequences, the aggressive action by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s would spread out of Ukraine.

Biden said Putin’s invasion of Ukraine was “premeditated and unprovoked… He rejected efforts at diplomacy. He thought the West and NATO wouldn’t respond. And, he thought he could divide us here at home. Putin was wrong. We were ready.

“Throughout our history we’ve learned this lesson – when dictators do not pay a price for their aggression, they cause more chaos. They keep moving. And, the costs and threats to America and the world keep rising.

“Ukrainians are fighting back with pure courage. Putin may make gains on the battlefield, but he’ll have to continue to pay a high price over the long run.”
The US has now joined Canada and the European Union, who also put similar bans in place earlier this week. On Sunday, they had announced that they were closing their airspace to all Russian aircraft, including private planes.

The ban comes after several sanctions have been imposed on Russia by the US, Europe, and other nations. The sanctions have already caused the rouble to fall, and will batter the country’s economy.

There is a distinct possibility that Russia could retaliate by closing its airspace to US aircraft, which could affect cargo carriers. UPS and FedEx both announced this weekend that they were suspending delivery operations to Russia.

European countries which have banned Russian aircraft from their airspace include Belgium , Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Romania.
