Tanzania’s Internet sensation Kili Paul receives Indian honour

The Indian High Commission in Tanzania honoured the country’s Internet sensation Kili Paul on Monday. The content creator from Tanzania is extremely popular on Instagram and other social network platforms for lip-syncing and dancing to popular tunes from Indian films and television.

Indian High Commissioner Binaya Pradhan posted about the “special visitor” on Twitter, saying the Tanzanian artist has “won millions of hearts in India”.

Popular he certainly is. Kili Paul has over 2 million subscribers on Instagram, and among his followers are several Indian celebrities, including actors like Ayushmann Khurrana, Gul Panag, and Richa Chadha.

Besides lip-syncing to popular Hindi film songs, Kili Paul also presents his dancing skills in the videos. One of Kili Paul’s videos – to the tune of the song ‘Raatan Lambiyan’ from the film Shershaah – in which his sister Neema Paul also makes an appearance, has been particularly appreciated by his fans.

Social media users have also appreciated the way Kili Paul highlights the culture and tradition of his own country even while admiring India. One user congratulated the Tanzanian sensation for getting the honour. “India in Tanzania did a great Job to greet and pay respect to this hero and great supporter of India soft power. We should and Missions should actively engage these soft power warriors for Indian good as well as global good,” the user said in his tweet.

Kili Paul’s Instagram profile describes him as a “dancer and content creator”. He also has a YouTube channel where all of his popular videos have been posted. One of his recent posts featured the wildly popular Bengali song ‘Kacha Badam’ (sung by peanut seller Bhuban Badyakar), in which his sister Neema is also seen performing alongside him. “Since everyone wanted to see @neemapaul155 dance to this, here it is the best she can do,” Kili Paul wrote in the video description.
