Kohli, Pant granted bio-bubble break, to miss third T20I against Windies

Kolkata: Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant will miss the third T20 to be played at the Eden Gardens against West Indies as they have opted for a bio-bubble break, which has been granted by the Indian cricket board (BCCI), several media reports claimed.

Both the Indian cricketers scored very important half-centuries in the second T20 at the Eden Gardens, which helped the team to post a target of 186.

According to media reports, the BCCI has permitted the former Indian skipper Kohli a 10-day break from the team’s bio-bubble as he left for home. This is in keeping with the board’s recent policy to rest the key players to manage their workload.

Like the first two, the third T20I match will also be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday.

In the second T20, which was won by India on Friday, Kohli smashed 52 promising a return to his form after a lean run on the crease for a long time. India have already taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the three-match series.

Kohli’s break will likely give a window for a new player, maybe Shreyas Iyer, to be a part of the playing XI on Sunday. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami are among the players rested for the West Indies series.

Recently, current Indian captain Rohit Sharma actively voiced his support for his immediate predecessor Kohli, who is widely perceived to be experiencing a rough patch in international cricket.

Sharma criticised the role of the media in propagating this perception. “If you (media) guys can keep quiet for a while, I think he’ll be alright. We don’t need too much talking from your side, then everything will be taken care of,” he said ahead of India’s first T20 match against the West Indies as part of the three-match series.

Kohli has scored 26 runs in the past three ODIs played against the West Indies earlier this month; this has left his admirers waiting for a return to his heavy-hitting. Though he has notched up occasional half-centuries, Kohli has been unable to score a single century since 2019.

Asked about Kohli’s mental state ahead of the first T20 match against the West Indies, Sharma stated, “He is in a great mental space from whatever I see of him. He has been part of this international team for more than a decade. If someone has spent that much time in international cricket, they know how to handle the pressure situations, the environment, and everything.”
