Madhya Pradesh to set up music academy, museum at Lata Mangeshkar’s birthplace

The Madhya Pradesh government has announced the setting up of a music academy and museum in memory of legendary singer and ‘Indian Nightingale’ Lata Mangeshkar at her birthplace, Indore, where Lata was born in a neighbourhood near a famous gurudwara on September 28, 1929, though her family originally came from the small town of Mangeshi in Goa.

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made the announcement after Lata passed away at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on February 6 following multi-organ failure brought on by Covid-related complications, at the age of 92.

Calling her the daughter of Madhya Pradesh, Chouhan said the state government will also set up a music college apart from a museum and a music academy in Indore.

“She is the daughter of Madhya Pradesh and we all are proud of her. She will always remain amid us with her melodious songs. The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to set up a college in memory of Lata Mangeshkar, besides a museum and a musical academy in Indore,” said Chouhan, who planted a sapling in memory of the iconic singer at her birthplace.

“Lataji was born in Indore. We have decided that a Sangeet Academy will be established in Indore in the name of Lataji, where children will be able to practice music. A museum will also be opened, where all her songs will be available,” tweeted Chouhan.

Indore will also see a statue of Lata. “After Lata didi’s passing, crores of Indians feel that they have suffered a personal loss. Lataji was not only the light of the music world but also a standard bearer for patriotism, from whom the whole country used to draw inspiration,” the CM said. The Madhya Pradesh government will also institute annual awards named after the legendary singer, to be conferred on artistes on her birth anniversary.
