Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma launches Green Campaign

Chief minister Conrad Sangma formally launched the Shillong My Passion campaign at a function held at Cleve Colony, Shillong, on Saturday. Shillong My Passion is a community-driven initiative for a cleaner and greener environment.

Speaking at the event, the CM termed the initiative ‘the beginning of a revolution’, while stating that the success of the programme would largely depend on the commitment of each and every individual. Praising the efforts of various organisations, institutions, local bodies and individuals that have been engaged in keeping the environment and surroundings clean, CM Sangma said the Shillong My Passion would provide a common platform for citizens to connect with the cause of a cleaner environment in the state.

Stating that sustained efforts by every individual were needed to bring change, the CM exhorted everyone to be more proactive. “It’s the responsibility of every individual to work towards the larger goal of keeping cities, towns, villages, rivers and water bodies clean and pollution free. I hope that the movement started here today will spread across the state,” CM Sangma said.

The chief minister spoke at length on the ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ concept and added that, in the era of a ‘market’ and ‘consumption’-driven economy, there was a strong need to balance economic growth with ecological sustainability.
