New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on the phone with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban and thanked him for the evacuation of 6000 Indian citizens through the Ukraine-Hungary border.
The two leaders discussed the ongoing situation in Ukraine and agreed on the need to ensure an immediate ceasefire and a return to diplomacy and dialogue.
“Prime Minister conveyed his warm thanks to Orban and to the Hungarian government for facilitating the evacuation of more than 6000 Indian citizens through the Ukraine-Hungary border,” an official statement said.
Prime Minister Orban conveyed his best wishes to the Indian medical students evacuated from Ukraine and said that they could choose to continue their studies in Hungary if they wished. PM Modi expressed his appreciation for this generous offer.

On February 26, the Indian mission in Hungary had released an advisory that said Indians stranded in Ukraine could get into Hungary through crossing at the Zahony-Uzhhorod border.
“For this, a liaison unit from the Embassy of India had been stationed at Zahony and it was coordinating with the Consulate General of Hungary in Uzzhorod,” the advisory read.
The advisory said that those who wanted to get into Hungary could not walk in but had to cross over by bus or van.
