Mother who threw daughter into bear pit faces murder charges

A mother charged with throwing her three-year-old daughter into a bear enclosure at Uzbekistan’s Tashkent Zoo faces a potential 15 years in prison for attempted murder. The incident came to light when a shocking video of the woman tossing the child into the bear pit went viral worldwide on February 2, following a report by Russia’s East2West news agency.

The disturbing footage, seemingly shot by a visitor to the zoo, shows the child being dropped into a trench about 16 feet below the enclosure’s

protective fencing, after which a large brown bear named Zuzu ambles up to sniff the child.

Zookeepers managed to draw the animal into a restricted part of the enclosure before they ran to rescue the little girl, who has reportedly suffered a concussion and cuts to the head and other parts of her body from the fall, reports say.

“A young woman threw a little girl down into a brown bear’s enclosure, in front of other visitors. It was unclear what her motive was,” a zoo spokesperson later said. “Both visitors and zoo staff were trying to stop her but couldn’t. We are terrified to even think how this could have ended had the bear viewed the child as its prey.”
