Mumbai: Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah has recently admitted that he is suffering from a condition called onomatomania where a person keeps repeating a particular word, phrase during their conversation. The actor revealed that the condition does not even let him rest or sleep and he is thinking of the phrases or words constantly.
While speaking to the YouTube channel, he talked about the condition. “I suffer from an ailment called onomatomania. I’m not joking. It’s a medical condition. You can check it in the dictionary,” he said.
The Gehraiyaan actor further added, “Onomatomania is an ailment in which you keep repeating a word or a phrase, a sentence or a verse or a speech for no reason at all. Except that you like to hear it. I do it all the time so I am never quite at rest. Even when I am sleeping, I am going over some passage I love.”

According to Dr Neha Anand, Counseling Psychologist at Bodhitri India Center, Lucknow, there is no particular treatment or preventive measure for onomatomania. In an interview with Onlymyhealth, she said a person suffering from onomatomania can live with the disease for a long time if it is not worsening the mental health. However, if the person is concerned about the disease, then the doctors can treat onomatomania by giving Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) therapy.
Some cognitive behavior studies revealed that onomatomania can be linked to obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD too. But onomatomania on its own is not a cause of concern. But if onomatomania is associated with anxiety disorder or OCD, then it can be worrisome.
Recently, a picture of Naseeruddin and his wife Ratna attended the marriage of actors Supriya Pathak and Pankaj Kapur’s daughter Sanah Kapoor. Sanah tied the knot with with Manoj Pahwa and Seema Pahwa’s son Mayank Pahwa. Given Supriya is Ratna’s sister, the entire family was present and the four veteran actors clicked a photograph. The picture went viral on social media and the fans loved seeing the four greatest actors from the Indian film industry in one frame. Fans even compared Naseeruddin to Albert Einstein with his white hair-white beard look.
