Rishabh Pant named India vice-captain for West Indies T20 series

After the announcement that regular vice-captain K.L. Rahul will be unable to play a series owing to injury, the Board for Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has selected Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant as the deputy of skipper and captain Rohit Sharma in India’s T20I series against the West Indies.

This marks the first inclusion of Pant in the leadership front of the Indian team. Pant’s elevation comes after Rahul suffered an upper-left hamstring strain while fielding during the second ODI against the West Indies in Ahmedabad.

In addition to the regular vice-captain, secretary of the BCCI Jay Shah announced that all-rounder Axar Patel will also not be a participant in the series, as he has resumed the final stage of his rehabilitation after having recently recovered from Covid-19.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee named Ruturaj Gaikwad and Deepak Hooda as replacements for Rahul and Patel.

All matches of the three-match T20 series will be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata from February 16.
