Ritabhari, Abir’s next film ‘Fatafati’ celebrates body positivity

Kolkata: It started on International Women’s Day in 2019 with Pritha Chakraborty’s Mukherjee Dar Bou starring the brilliant Anusuya Majumdar and Koneenica Banerjee. In 2020, director Aritra Mukherjee followed it up with Brahma Janen Gopon Kommoti with Ritabhari Chakraborty playing the woman priest. And now, every year, the Bengali audience wait with bated breath when Windows Production will announce their new women-centric film on March 8. This year, Windows is back with yet another film announcement on Women’s Day. Titled Fatafati, the film stars Ritabhari and Abir Chatterjee and will be directed by Aritra Mukherjee.

Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay and Nandita Roy’s Windows Production is essentially known for churning out socially relevant films. Since 2019, the producer duo has decided to release a women-oriented film celebrating International Women’s Day.

Interestingly, back in 2020, Windows had launched the poster of Fatafati, which raises questions against body-shaming and celebrates the beauty of a plus-size model. Aparajita Auddy was supposed to act in the lead with Ambarish Bhattacharya essaying the role of her husband.

But now, there has a change in the cast. Ritabhari has replaced Aparajita with Abir playing her hubby. This is for the first time both the actors will be seen together.

Ritabhari collaborated with Aritra for Brahma Janen Gopon Kommoti, a film which ran to packed houses ahead of the nationwide lockdown in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic in India. In its 13-day run in theatres, it was lapped up by the audiences across Bengal. The film was even included in the Indian Panorama of the prestigious International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa, which took place in January, 2021.

This is the second collaboration for both the actors with Windows. While Ritabhari was in Brahma Janen Gopon Kommoti, Abir played a brief but crucial role in Anindya Chattopadhyay’s Manojder Adbhut Bari.

Fatafati is about an XL model and highlights the important issue of body-shaming. While the story and screenplay are by Zinia Sen, Samragnee Bandopadhyay has penned the dialogues.

For Ritabhari, Brahma Janen Gopon Kommoti was certainly an important film. It brought her accolades galore and she is elated to be back to where it all started — Windows.

“I am immensely proud of Brahma Janen Gopon Kommoti not because of the box office success that it brought us, but the change it brought about in society with women priests taking a step forward. With Fatafati too, I hope to drive home a very important message. Not only am I confident about the team I am working with, I am truly happy to be back with them, as it feels like home,” she said.

Abir, on his part, added, “I have always wanted to work with Windows and am delighted to be a part of this film. Also, cinema is an important medium and we, as actors, want to communicate a few things through it, as much as we want to entertain people. Fatafati has both in equal measure.”

Aritra, who is on a high post his Baba, Baby O… success, said, “I have worked with Ritabhari. She is a powerful actress and I wanted to collaborate with her again. In this film, Abir will be in a completely different avatar.”

Talking about Fatafati, producer Shiboprosad said, “Windows always focuses on creating original content that are meaningful. We are happy to bring the audience yet another film that will be both important and entertaining.”

Fatafati will go on the floors in mid-April and eyes early next year release.
