Rituparna Sengupta’s new film ‘Amar Lobongolota’ features Bappi Lahiri’s music

Kolkata: For Rituparna Sengupta, only Bappi Lahiri could convince her to record a Durga Puja song. And despite his ill health, the veteran music director-singer recorded the Durga Puja song, Phoolmoti, last year with Rituparna. It seems it was the legendary musician’s last work in Bengali. Lahiri not only composed the music but also sang alongside Rituparna. It was a once-in-a-lifetime moment for the Bengali actress. So, when Rituparna heard the legendary musician was no more, she couldn’t control her tears.

Sobbing uncontrollably, she says, “He was like a family to me. I can’t even imagine he is no more. He was the one who convinced me that I can sing. I was extremely nervous but he instilled faith in me. Toke gaan gaitey hobe … (you will have to sing). Then, for the next three days, we recorded the songs. Despite him not keeping well, he didn’t leave the recording room. The audiences loved Phoolmoti,” says Rituparna.

In the upcoming releases of Rituparna, she is lucky to have Bappi da’s ‘golden touch’. In her new film, Amar Lobongolota, which is based on Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, Rajani, the ‘Disco Dancer’ music director has composed the tracks. The actress can’t wait for the film to be released now. The film also stars Indraneil Sengupta, Alamgirh and Sreela Majumdar.

The actress made sure she dropped in at his place whenever she is in Mumbai. “His house was like my second home. He and his family treated me to lavish spreads whenever I visited them. He was like an elder brother to me. It is a personal loss to me. He was full of life and his contribution to Indian music is beyond measure,” says Rituparna.
