Comedian Chris Rock finally broke his silence days after the famous slapgate Will Smith incident at the Oscars 2022. He was performing a stand-up at Boston’s Wilbur Theater and he was greeted with a standing ovation.
“How was your weekend?” Chris Rock asked the crowd. But the comedian said he did not have any jokes about the slap because he was “still kind of processing what happened,” Variety reported.
“At some point I’ll talk about that… and it will be serious and funny,” he said. Then, Rock said, “I’m going to tell some jokes. It’s nice to just be out.”
Smith left the audience shocked when he hit Chris Rock in the face on stage at the Oscars after the comedian made a joke about the actor’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith on Sunday. But then, when he went onto the stage for the second time, this time to receive the Best Actor for King Richard, he was calmer.
He apologized to the Academy and the other nominees for slapping Rock. After accepting the award tearfully for his role as Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena Williams, in the film King Richard, Will Smith said, “Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family.”
The incident started when Chris referred to Pinkett Smith’s shaved hairdo and said: “Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2.”
Smith walked up on the stage and appeared to hit the comedian on his face.
In a video, which is going viral on social media, Chris is seen walking up to the stage to present the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. He cracked a joke about the look of actress Pinkett Smith’s shaved hair.
Following this, Smith went to the stage and hit Chris on the face. Smith returned to his seat and screamed from the audience, and said, “Keep my wife’s name out of your… mouth.”
Will Smith has apologised to Rock for slapping him and said his act was ‘wrong’.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong,” Smith said in a statement. “I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.
“I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us,” the Hollywood superstar said.
