Bhopal: The Kashmir Files (TKF) director Vivek Agnihotri found himself in the middle of a controversy when he was in Bhopal to attend a film festival in the city. This time, the controversy isn’t about his recently released film but about saying “Bhopali” means “homosexual”.
The interview where the director is seen stating that Bhopali means “homosexual” in Madhya Pradesh has gone viral on social media. This hasn’t gone down well with the citizens of Bhopal and also triggered widespread criticism from politicians especially the opposition Congress.
Ahead of The Kashmir Files director visit to Bhopal on Friday, the video clip of the old view has been doing the rounds on the internet. In the Hindi interview, he is seen saying that he has grown up in Bhopal but he doesn’t consider himself as a Bhopali. This is because Bhopali has a different connotation. The director then even asks the anchor to ask any Bhopali about the meaning and even tells him that he would explain it to him in private. ” If someone says he is Bhopali, it generally means he is homosexual, a person with Nawabi likings,” Agnihotri is heard saying in the video interview.
Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh was one of the first to criticize.
“Vivek Agnihotri ji, this might be your personal experience. This is not the experience of an ordinary Bhopal resident. I have been associated with Bhopal and Bhopalis since 1977, but my experience has not been so. The influence of company has an effect, wherever you may live,” he tweeted.
Akshay Kumar, who also attended the film festival in Bhopal, was all praise for The Kashmir Files. He said Agnihotri’s recent film has brought to the forefront a bitter truth of India. “The film has come like a blessing. But yes, it destroyed my film Bachchhan Paandey,” he said.
Recently, Akshay shot for Selfiee with Emraan Hashmi and Nushratt Bharuccha in Bhopal. Nusrat is also Akshay’s co-star in Ram Setu.
So far, The Kashmir Files has minted over Rs 211 crore at the box office. However, the release of SS Rajamouli’s RRR will act as a road blocker. Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “TheKashmirFiles is impacted due to #RRR + reduction of screens and shows… Biz should jump on [third] Sat and Sun… [Week 3] Fri 4.50 cr. Total: ₹ 211.83 cr. #India biz.”
