Vikas Vaibhav, IPS: Striking a Perfect Balance Between Passion and Profession

Editor’s Note (Archival Restoration & 2026 Update): This profile was originally published by The Optimist News on May 15, 2020, documenting IPS Vikas Vaibhav’s tenure as DIG of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Bihar. To reflect his ongoing service and recent administrative postings, this article has been updated with his 2026 career milestones as Inspector General of Police (IG), Magadh Range.

“Reality can be experienced only with the eyes of understanding, not just by a scholar,” said the ancient Indian philosopher Adi Shankaracharya. This saying is deeply reflected in 2003-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Vikas Vaibhav.

There is a story behind every officer in uniform, and DIG Vaibhav’s early life leading to his transformation in law enforcement gives a clear insight into his roots.

Education and the Pull Toward Civil Services

A keen observer of heritage, Vaibhav completed his Bachelor’s degree from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. Despite lucrative corporate avenues, he was determined to build a career in the civil services, viewing it as a unique opportunity to serve society at the grassroots level.

“When I was studying at IIT, I already had a strong feeling within my mind to do something that would contribute to society at large,” says IPS Vaibhav. “When I thought about making a career, I was attracted to the civil services because it provided the opportunity for leadership at a very young age.”

He adds: “Civil services also provides the platform for making a difference in the lives of the masses. Thus, I thought that I should make every effort to join the service to serve society for self-satisfaction instead of working for the benefit of a corporate entity.”

Beyond the Uniform: Art, Heritage, and ‘Silent Pages’

Vaibhav is widely known for his deep love of art, history, and archaeology. He regularly travels across the nation to explore lesser-known historical sites and document their cultural heritage. Since 2013, he has managed a widely followed personal blog named Silent Pages, where he records his historical travels and reflections.

When asked about managing demanding police duties alongside his passion for history, Vaibhav shares his core mantra: “Where there is a will, there is a way. However busy one may be, one always finds time for one’s passion. I am highly passionate about the past and use it to draw lessons for the present and future.”

He notes that exploring history acts as a vital mental release: “Understanding the link to a place’s heritage has become a part of my life. It de-stresses me, providing a sanctuary away from the hectic and otherwise stressful job that routine policing entails.”

Thoughts Behind the Man on Many Missions

Drawing inspiration from Swami Vivekananda and Adi Shankaracharya, the officer places immense faith in the power of Indian youth. He actively seeks opportunities to connect with young citizens, encouraging them to discover their potential and appreciate India’s historical legacy.

“I have a strong feeling that the future of India depends on how the present generation grooms our youth,” says Vaibhav. “I am deeply impacted by the thoughts of Swami Vivekananda and Adi Shankaracharya, who stressed the importance of youth in building the nation.”

He believes that professional success should serve a larger purpose: “Anyone who attains success should not live a limited life, but should try to spread inspiration to others who are still struggling to walk up the ladder. Collectively, that is the path toward a more positive future.”

Known across social media as the “Guruji Cop,” he frequently uses digital platforms and public talks to mentor students, promote lawfulness, and spark interest in national heritage. In fact, his acknowledgment of our original 2020 report sparked hundreds of positive conversations about the role of police in youth development.

2026 Update: Taking Charge as IG of Magadh Range

Building upon his decades of service—which included serving as Adviser to the Bihar State Planning Board—senior IPS officer Vikas Vaibhav currently serves as the Inspector General of Police (IG) of the Magadh Range, headquartered in Gaya, Bihar.

In this role, IG Vaibhav oversees law and order across three key districts: Gaya, Aurangabad, and Nawada. Taking charge following a state administrative transfer, he has outlined a firm operational roadmap focused on modern policing standards:

  • Zero-Tolerance Policy: Implementing strict, systematic measures against organized crime and unlawful activities across the Magadh region.
  • Fast-Tracking Investigations: Streamlining administrative procedures to ensure rapid case disposals and timely justice for victims.
  • Community Outreach: Expanding youth-focused civil campaigns—including initiatives that parallel broader regional efforts in women empowerment and social development—to foster trust between citizens and law enforcement.

By combining an uncompromising administrative approach with ongoing youth engagement, IG Vikas Vaibhav continues to demonstrate how law enforcement officers can maintain public safety while actively inspiring positive societal change.
